- <p> DIED. Max Gordon, 86, shrewd Greenwich Village club owner
- and jazz promoter; in New York City. For 55 years Gordon
- operated the Village Vanguard in the heart of Manhattan's
- bohemia, where his unerring ear resulted in the discoveries of
- Judy Holliday, Betty Comden and Adolph Green and the showcasing
- of such jazz instrumentalists as John Coltrane and Sonny
- Rollins. A father figure to fledgling stage talent, he helped
- launch the careers of Barbra Streisand, Pearl Bailey and Woody
- Allen.
