  16. operated the Village Vanguard in the heart of Manhattan's
  17. bohemia, where his unerring ear resulted in the discoveries of
  18. Judy Holliday, Betty Comden and Adolph Green and the showcasing
  19. of such jazz instrumentalists as John Coltrane and Sonny
  20. Rollins. A father figure to fledgling stage talent, he helped
  21. launch the careers of Barbra Streisand, Pearl Bailey and Woody
  22. Allen.
